Obituary for Jewel M. THOMAS
Dr. Jewel M. Thomas passed away on September 20, 2021. She is survived by her son, Joseph B. Thomas,Jr. (Gwendolyn) and her brother, James Earl McCuller(Shirley). She leaves to mourn eight grandchildren, thirteen great granchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Dr. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Thomas,Sr., a son, Rev. Daryll Thomas (Melanie), and two daughters, Maria Denise Nevett (Bobby Jackie), and Linda Carol Jones (Lorenzo).
Dr. Jewel was an educator for over forty years. She was employed by Jefferson County Schools, Lawson State Junior College and Miles College. She was the first black female mayor of Brighton, Alabama and served two terms as mayor from nineteen eighty four to nineteen ninety two.
Dr. Jewel Thomas had a long life of serving the Lord, her family, church and community.
A gravesite service will be held on Tuesday September 28, 2021 at Highland Memorial Gardens, Bessemer, Alabama at 12noon CST. Services are entrusted to Young Funeral Home 1107 Hank Aaron Dr. SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30315
