Obituary for Alice Faye McCallum Gillis Briley
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mrs. Alice Faye McCallum Briley of Lumberton, North Carolina. Alice was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on August 5, 1942 and departed this life on November 3, 2014 at Duke Medical Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. She was the only child born to the late Wilbet F. McCallum and Jessie Bell Hall McCallum. Alice was married to the late George H. Briley. Early in life she was baptized at First Baptist Church in Lumberton, North Carolina. As a youth she was very active with the church choir where she sang and played the piano. Alice loved music and realized the importance of education. She graduated from J.H. Hayswood High School and went on to pursue higher education at Winston Salem State Teachers College (Winston Salem State University) receiving a Bachelors in Education and Music. She continued on to receive her Masters Degree in Education from Virginia State College . After receiving her education and realizing her love for helping others she became an Educator in the Virginia Public School System and the Robeson County Public School system where she retired in 2002. Alice was an active and dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated , The United Order of Tent, The Progressive Garden Club and The National Association of University Women. Alice was a musician and used her talent to serve in the community. She was the organist for Bethany Presbyterian Church for many years and she also rendered a lending hand at Panthers Ford Presbyterian Church and Mount Olive United Methodist Church. In her past time she co-wrote a book with long time friend Helen Williams (Walk Down Memory Lane 1970-1999) . Alice Faye or Faye as she was also known as was a very kind, loving and giving person always willing to serve her family, friends and community anytime there was a need. She leaves to cherish her memories, a Son Daniel C. Gillis (Angela) Vice President of Young Funeral Home of Atlanta, Georgia, Two daughters Melody Gillis Calhoun (Michael) of Lithonia, Georgia and Angela Briley Gwynn (Clifford) of Marietta, Georgia; Six Grandchildren : Lori Rae Campbell Gillis of Lafayette, Georgia, Jaylyn D. Gillis of Atlanta, Quenisha Thompson of Atlanta, Kobe Calhoun and McKenzie Calhoun of Lithona, Georgia and Malia Gwynn of Marietta, Georgia. One Sister Barbara Ann Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina, One Cousin Edward Vester Maultsby of Riverdale, Georgia. Two uncles Issac McCallum (Louanne) of Laurinburg, North Carolina and Darius McCallum (Jeanette) of Lumberton, North Carolina. A very special and dear friend Mr. Clifton Harrington and a host of relatives and friends.
